Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases
Date: 12 August – 22 August 2024
Venue: University of Cape Town
Course fee: ZAR 11,500
Requirements: Basic skills in R and epidemiology
The Modelling and Simulation Hub, Africa (MASHA) at the University of Cape Town will be hosting a two week short course on the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of mathematical disease modelling as an invaluable tool to aid decision-making in public health policy. There is a need for analysts equipped with this skillset, particularly on the African continent.
This short course will focus on the application of mathematical modelling and computer simulation to predict the dynamics of infectious diseases to evaluate the potential impact of policy in reducing morbidity and mortality.
Topics covered include compartmental models, spatial models, economic evaluation methods and more. The course is practically focused along with a series of lectures, discussions and practical exercises.
This course is aimed at postgraduate students in Science and Health Sciences faculties and health-based researchers interested in the field of mathematical modelling for infectious diseases and public health policy. In order to leverage the interactive nature of the course, participation is in-person and the course capacity is limited to 20.
Note: UCT Students wishing to attend this course in lieu of a Masters Module will need to register for STA5066Z offered by the Department of Statistical Sciences. Please indicate this on the application form.
The course fee covers registration and lunch only. Accommodation and other meals will be for the participant’s account.
Funding: Postgraduate students and staff from academic institutions outside UCT, and public health officials are eligible to receive a discounted course fee.
Eligibility: Attendees are required to have previous exposure to quantitative training. Basic skills in R programming (or any other language) and epidemiology is required. Participants are also required to bring a laptop to the course. Participants from SADC countries will be given preference.
