Newton Fund Researcher Links Workshop: Neglected Diseases in SEA: Building Capacity in Epidemiological Modelling
Southeast Asia countries face common threats from infections, including neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and neglected zoonotic diseases (NZDs) that particularly affect marginalized communities―the most vulnerable to exposure and least able to seek treatment. Understanding the transmission and control of infectious diseases can be aided by mathematical modelling, helping to predict disease outbreaks, quantify intervention impact, estimate economic and health-care burdens, and inform cost-effective public health strategies. This workshop will introduce participants to topics from bacterial & viral to helminth NTDs and NZDs through series of lectures and practicals followed by group discussions and Q&A sessions, addressing: a) basic models for vector-borne diseases; b) infection intensity frameworks for helminth infections, and c) models for zoonotic infections.
The aims of the workshop are;
- To share knowledge in the field of mathematical modelling of NTDs and NZDs
- To provide early career scientists with familiarity in mathematical modelling in the field of NTD/NZD epidemiology and public/One health
- To initiate a regional network of public/One health specialists in South East Asia that will acquire quantitative expertise to tackle and share experiences in NTD/NZD intervention, implementation and evaluation
- To strengthen ties between public/One health research agencies in South East Asia and the United Kingdom through research collaboration
The target audience will be early career researchers and scientists ((PhD students and PhD holders with up to 10 years experience) working in epidemiology, parasitology, and public/One health. Previous mathematical expertise is not required. Those interested in applying will submit a CV and a cover letter (personal statement indicating why the course would benefit the applicant’s collaborative research development in the area of NTDs/NZDs) via email to the partner applicants. Spaces are limited to 12 Malaysian and 12 UK participants.
Those selected will be covered for the costs of:
