A dynamic transmission model of multi-drug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB) epidemic was constructed with the inclusion of transmission-related and treatment-related acquisition of resistance. This modelling study showed that most of the incident MDR-TB cases are more likely from transmission than treatment-related acquisition of resistance. It also highlighted the point that the improvement in diagnosis and treatment of MDR-TB such as new tests and regimens are the keys to reduce the burden of MDR-TB.
Figure below is the simplified schematic of the model showing progression through stages of tuberculosis infection, disease, and treatment, and showing the opportunities to develop drug-resistant tuberculosis via either acquisition or transmission of resistance.
